January 17, 2019 – Microscope Lab
This week in science class was all about learning how to use a microscope. It was a lab about certain skills that we needed to have in order to study cells; our current unit. We were specifically learning about how to use a light microscope. We learned these skills at our table groups as we magnified objects such as the letter “e” from a newspaper, a plant cell on a wet mound slide, an onion cell, and animal cells; which were collected from the cheek cells of voluntary students. We then drew them according to the pictures that we took when the objects were under the magnifications: scanning, low power, and high power. We also learnt how to label and identify parts of the cell such as the mitochondria, cell wall, nucleus, and cytoplasm. We learnt that under certain magnifications, it was difficult to clearly identify where certain parts of the cell were; especially when it was hard to focus on the object.
