Grade 9 Osmosis Lab
Jan. 25, 2019
This week in science class, we had a lab which was aimed to observe osmosis by looking at the relationship between different solutions and the amount of weight gained or lost by an egg. We put an egg inside vinegar, water, and syrup for 24-48 hours, and measured its mass after. The egg gained weight inside all 3 of the solutions, but gained the most weight in water, gained some weight in vinegar, and gain the least weight in syrup. However, in syrup, the egg lost weight because it had already gained weight in the previous trials. We also observed the egg’s color, smell, texture, etc. The goal of this lab was to osmosis, which was shown by how the egg gained weight in hypotonic solutions (water and vinegar) and lost weight in a hypertonic solution (syrup). Also, we wrote a Lab on this experiment, and the lab was assessed on Criteria C: Processing and evaluating and Criteria D: Reflecting on the impacts of science.
